Arizona - Again

June 11:  Las Vegas, NV to Flagstaff, AZ

We decided that we’re eager to get home, so we will be cutting back on our visit to Santa Fe and we’ll skip Colorado all together.  We headed east from Las Vegas and stopped in Flagstaff again to visit the town.  We walked around downtown and stopped to listen to a local music festival.

June 12:  Flagstaff, AZ to Holbrook, AZ

Just west of Flagstaff, we stopped at the Painted Desert and Petrified Forest.  We took a couple of short hikes among the petrified logs filled with beautiful colored rock.  The different colors come from minerals that had been in the water that saturated the fallen logs.  Petrified wood in not wood at all, but rock and weighs almost 200 pounds per cubic foot.  We stayed at a campground in Holbrook, AZ where there is an old Route 66 motel called the Wigwam – yup, the rooms are all in cement wigwams and the owners have vintage cars parked in the parking lot.  Jack went to get a Sunday newspaper and stopped to take pictures of the Wigwam as well as some fun pictures of dinosaurs along Interstate 40.

June 13:  Holbrook, AZ to Albuquerque, NM

In Albuquerque we spent Sunday afternoon walking around adobe Old Town and exploring the shops.  We completely skipped the Gallup area, Ship Rock and Sandia Peak section of Albuquerque.  We can do the area when we do Colorado next summer.
