Utah – St. George, Zion

May 21:  Bryce to St. George, UT
We left Bryce today to go to St. George- about 140 miles.  When we awoke in Bryce, it was in the 30s and when we got to St. George it was in the 100s.  We have a parking lot snowbird campground, but it has TV, and shopping, but no internet.  St. George is in Utah’s “Dixie” area as the weather is moderate during the summer and attracts lots of golfers and snowbirds in the winter.  Went to dinner at Applebee’s across the street after touring about town to get the lay of the land.

May 22:  St. George, UT

Jack got a Sunday paper and we relaxed all morning.  Took a dip in the pool and went to the movies to see Sahara.  The movie was ok.  The temperature broke records today – over 100 and tomorrow is supposed to be the same.

May 23:  St. George, UT

Took our kayak up to a local reservoir, just north of St. George.  It was too windy to use the sail, but we enjoyed paddling the kayak around and had a picnic lunch.

May 31:  St. George to Boulder City, NV

We've been very busy and today is finally Journal catch up time!  Using St. George as a home base, we explored Zion on two different days.  We passed on the northern section of Zion.  It has been unbearably hot – over 100, so we do all our walking in the mornings or early afternoon.  We did a number of different hikes – Weeping Rock, Canyon Overlook, Emerald Pool Trail, and Riverside walk.  The river walk was interesting because the river is much higher and faster than normal due to high snows runoff and there were waterfalls that hadn’t been seen for fifteen years.  Zion is closed to car traffic, so we took the bus shuttle to the various viewpoints and trailheads.

We also explored Snow Canyon State Park in a red rock area.  We hiked a couple of trails that were mostly through desert scrub grass, but we did see rocks with pioneer names carved into them.  We also took a hike that required a ranger up to a pretty arch and a dead-end canyon.  We also hiked over slick rock trying to find the natural amphitheater that was supposed to be at the end of the White Rocks/ Lava Flow Overlook.  We ended up climbing rock cliffs and never did find the amphitheater.

We spent most of our time in St. George relaxing, shopping, playing golf (Jack), going to the movies and trying to stay cool as we waited to head for Las Vegas to meet up with John and Laurie.  In addition to Sahara, we saw Star Wars and the Interpreter.  We skipped the Grand Canyon North, although the weather would have been perfect.

We decided to have some prints made of the best of our digital pictures.  I started copying them to cds so I could take them to the store for printing.  Guess I got carried away, as we ended up printing over 900 pictures.

We’re leaving for Boulder City today.
